One of our neighbors on Vanderbilt Ave. worked at Halloran as a volunteer. One day she brought me out to visit with the injured vets. (I was around 5 or 6). One man had the greatest collection of model airplanes I had ever seen! They were suspended with string above his bed..there were B-25 Liberators, Spitfires, B-29's, "Black Widows (what were they Charlie..P-38's?), you name it. And they were all "stick" models, none of the expensive plastic junk they sell to kids today that can be built in one afternoon.
I was so inspired that I b*tched and moaned until my parents bought
me a stick model (they weren't very expensive...maybe 50cents) to
build. Everyone told me that I was too young to make it and were
nervous about me using razor blades to cut out the balsa parts. Well,
they were right! Even years later I never could ever finish a stick
model that looked as good as the ones that wounded vet made...DAN
