Well, Islanders, it's the 18th of December already and "Silent Night" is playing on the radio. Soon it will be Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" which is one of the earliest songs I can remember hearing as a really little kid. And, I haven't finished my Christmas shopping; haven't even started, in fact, although I have been thinking about it, as I used to tell my teachers when the homework wasn't quite ready.

I remember Christmas on the Island. For one thing there was usually snow, either on the ground from something that happened right after Thanksgiving, or, if we were really lucky, fresh snow for Christmas! Was Santa Claus real? Must be, because I remember waiting for him one Christmas Eve, and and asking about how he was going to make it all around, when my Dad came home and reported seeing him just down the street. I ran to the door to look out. Didn't actually see him, but had no doubt he was there.

What was Christmas like in your neighborhood?
