In a 12/09 posting on Snowstorms, J.R. used the phrase "Depression Era" to describe something. That got me to thinking that this was the first mention I'd seen here of one of the central influences of life on SI since the 'thirties, namely the Depression.
Dunno 'bout you, but this was one of the big unstated influences on a lot of our lives. My parents were coming out of their teens and getting married in the midst of the Depression. I was born when the war (WWII) economy was pulling the country out of the Depression. My parents were risk averse. To a certain extent, I've absorbed that trait, in economic matters. Stay out of debt (I wish), get an education, get a job, preferably a civil service job, on the cops, or the fireman, or sanitation, these were themes a lot of SI youngsters heard more than once, and responded to.
What about your life do you attribute to your family's experience living through the Depression?
