I always thought that coming from SI made us special. We had an identity that someone from Perth Amboy, or anyplace in Joisey, for that matter, didn't have. We had the ferry; we were an island. We were officially part of New York City, but Manhattan was the City, we were the farm and Clove Lakes Park with fishing and horses, we were the Beach, we were even the Dump. Tell someone you're from SI and this is what they know if they're from the Greater New York area. Is that it? Is this all that distinguishes us from Joisey? What else are we good for? Beyond the physical features, or are we all mere atoms in a homogenized whole? I think what really sets us apart is that we had some common experiences, some of the same teachers and other influential types. Maybe we shouldn't skip past these so briefly. Who (or what), related somehow to SI, made a difference in your life?
