In reading these stories, it brought back memories from the perspective of an nine year old boy who participated in opening day ceremonies. I remember standing on the concrete pavement on the Staten Island side of the bridge amongst the throng of people from different organizations. What stands out most clearly were the American Indians dressed in typical native garments. This done to recognize their contribution in performing many of the high-wire acts as part of the construction phase. I suppose today this type of recognition would be politically incorrect. I remember it being a cold and damp day and couldn't wait for all those politicians to finish with their blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, so we could walk across the bridge! Even today, as we drive past other bridges under construction, the memories associated with the construction and my subsequent teenage years (where the evening shadow of the bridge provided excellent cover for making out in the parking lot at Ft. Wadsworth) remain vivid in my mind. I also recall the toll only being .50 and the idea that once the bridge was paid for, the toll would stop. Anything to make a buck (or at least 7.00 bucks!) I guess that paint job was very expensive! P.S. Has anyone seen that yellow '53 chevy high-boy lately at A&W's on Hylan Boulevard?
