Charlie: the outfit I worked for was AAT electronics, I'm suprised to hear they're still in business (if that's the one you see in the magazines). The owner was Tony Maracini, I think a New Dorp grad and a real nice guy to work for. He would encourage all his techs to strike out on their own (not in his territory, of course) and would even put up a little "seed" money to get them started.
Some of the weird calls I went out on (in addition to the ferry boats)
Going on a Swedish sugar ship in Brooklyn to fix a radio transmitter.. the first mate was a lady, and she was a knockout! Her english was minimal and my swedish null and the radio's operating switches and instructions were all in Swedish. I finally found something that looked a fuse and soldered in what I thought was about the same size...it worked...I wanted to hit her up for a date, but couldn't make myself understood.
Going to Adqueduct race track up to the Judge's stand to work on a two way radio that communicated with the guys operating the starting gate...two Pinkerton men frisked me THOROUGHLY and then went over my tool box with a fine tooth comb.
Climbing up on top of a water tower at 600 Victory Blvd (Silver Lake Hi-Rise apts.) to work on a repeater antenna...when I put my hand over the edge of the tower to hoist myself over, a swarm of pigeons took off in my face, I started going over backwards and just caught myself at the last minute.
Going on a tugboat tied up in Jersey City to install channel crystals
for the Norfolk harbor frequencies, when I was finished, the boat was
already underway for Norfolk, but I convinced the skipper to let me
off somewhere in Mariner's harbor and was able to get a cab back to my
truck in Jersey City. That's when I decided it was time to get an
overseas job...If ya gotta travel...might as well make some bucks
doing it!...DAN
