I rode the ferry for less than two years as a comuter in the Mid '60s after being discharged from the Navy. To me the ride everyday was a sightseeing trip. I would watch all the ships and wonder where they were coming from or going to? during this time the foreign liners were still in business including the France, QE1, QM, and the three Italian liners. Of these the France is the only one in service under a diffrerent name, the Norway I think. The other big liners all ended up in bad states. The original QE burned in Hong Kong, the great Italian liners sat in Genoa for many years and then were sold to Iran as barracks ships for their naval schools, and also burned during the revolution. Before the Brooklyn Navy Yard closed there was also the traffic of ships coming and going for repairs. The two biggest that I remember were the Carriers FDR and Forrestal. Others will remembet the Battleships that were in storage at the Navy supply docks in Bayonne. Having had a small taste of salt in my blood the challange of going back to sea was always present and eventually won! The Ferry trips provided a small picture of the world and an introduction to a lifelong adventure of world travel. oldnacl
