i was a senior in high school at the time and was in journalism class. the class was rather informal and after we heard that the president was dead, i left the room and wandered down the hall. i encountered my english teacher who was leaning against the wall. i asked him what he thought and he said (and this is an exact qoute),"the people of this country should be more careful in choosing their vice-president" i thought that was a strange thing to say at the time, but given what happened with lbj as president, it appears amazingly prophetic. after school, i went home. my parents were usually off from work on fridays and were in the habit of taking an afternoon nap. when i walked in the house, i noticed their bedroom door was closed. it was obvious that they hadn't heard. i woke them and told them. i can still see there expressions. they looked completely bewildered.
