I was in the Navy, stationed in Key West on that day in 1963. I remember
the day well. Since it was only a year after the Missles of October, Key West
was still an armed camp. Being only 90 miles from Cuba, we were constantly
on alert. A friend came running into to where I worked with a portable
radio. I immediately called home and told my wife to turn on the TV.
Later she tried to call me and I tried to call her again. All phone contact
on and off the base had been closed down. Nobody yet knew if it was a
USSR plot, if we were going to war or what. Within a few hours, things
relaxed and got back to normal as possible under the circumstances, as
the powers that be figured out there was no attacking wave of aircraft
or missles coming from Cuba, but it was a very tense day in Key West.
