When I rode the Hong Kong - Kowloon ferries back in the 60's I don't remember any pleasant smells. At that time the Chinese were still using human waste for fertilizer and you could smell Hong Kong from 20miles off-shore as your ship approached it. In fact one of the scenes in the book the "Sand Pebbles" had one of the swabbies coming inebriated back to his ship and falling in one of the waste barges. (Don't know if Steve McQueen got to do that in the movie...after all he was the star!)...DAN
