I believe I remember stories about the nets stretching across the Narrows,
probably near where the VN is now. There were net tenders that opened and
closed it for friendly ships. I also heard some stories about Coast Guard
Patrols from Sandy Hook across to Long Island. Beyond that the ships
were in no-man's land. I've heard that was the only time they ever shut down
the Ambrose Light Ship.
Never heard of any Nazis landing on SI, but I have heard stories of it happening
on Long Is. and the Jersy shore. Have no idea if they were true.
