Although the biggest church bazaar in my neighborhood, West New Brighton was at Sacred Heart Church on Castleton Avenue, I always thought the best church bazaar was at St. Mary's Episcopal also on Castleton ave. The had games that kids could play without losing a lot of money and always win a prize. There was a great flea market where you could buy all kinds of books and toys. I bought the complete set of Tom Swift and the Rover Boys for a penny a volume! (30cents worth).
The bazaars in those days were a far cry from the commercial
operations you see today where a contractor comes in, sets up rides
and you buy tickets from strangers to ride on them. The participation
of the local church and its' parishoners is minimal...the church
basically leases out its' parking lot and then gets a cut of the
profits raked in by the amusement contractor...DAN
