I left at age 17 to join the Navy (1957). I wanted to get out on my own and see
something of the world. I expected to return when my enlistment was up.
But, as the saying goes, I found a home in the Navy. Naval Aviation to
be specific. I actually enjoyed it and stayed for 20 years. It's now been
over 20 years since I retired from the Navy. Why didn't I return then or
since? Basically because I didn't want to live within a major city. And
with the VN, SI was more 'citified'. Also, you go where the jobs are.
Where there's a need for your skills. That explains why I don't live near
the favorite places I've been stationed, but rather at the Mecca of Hi Tech
Test Facilities for Naval Aviation. While I'm very proud of my SI upbringing
and heritage,(as evidenced by my frequent visits to these pages), SI is
where I'm FROM. HOME is where I hang my hat. I've always had the ability
to look at best side of any situation, including where I live. I adapt,
and make my residence my home. So home is Southern Maryland, but I will
always be a born and bred Staten Islander.
Side note: My son who never saw anything of SI except visits as a
youngster, now lives on SI as an adult. What goes around, comes around.
(I guess).

PS: To Bob S and Dan. That's 40 years since I left, with only occasional return
visits. Grant me pardon for forgetting the location of the hospital I was born in?
