TJ You're right Brooklyn "stoops gathers" without knowing it were the original *welcome wagon*, *neighborhood crime watch*, & *child guidence committee*.
I was born in Brooklyn lived there till I was 6 then did the rest of my growing uP on Staten Island. I live in Ft. Lauderdale now & about 3 years ago decided it was time to put a patio set on the concrete slab in front of my house. OH MY!!! what a turn of events happened when my neighbor & I deciced we would start having evening coffee on the front deck. I live on the last street in a single family development & never knew how many people walked, jogged, biked etc. passed my house in the evening. My neighbor & I started saying "hi" & then started offering coffee/tea as they passed & eventually bits and pieces of conversation emerged. WOW!!! Now it not unusual to see good neighbors gathered on my front patio for a "cupa", good conversation & laughs...and they LUV it. Recently the "front stoop" observation came up in conversation & all agreed a front porch or front stoop is where the world should be to meet, greet & make new friends. Other neighbors have now put patio sets in fron of their homes & are enjoying the pleaure finally feeling the live in a "real neighborhood w/ real people" and the kids get to hang out w/ adult supervision near by. It's great. Their is a super county song called "If Whole World Had A Front Porch" it' says it all...get it & get with it.
