I observed the opening of the bridge from Ft. Wadsworth on Staten Island with my father who was a Longshoreman on Pier 4 (Dan, I can see you smiling). He suggested that it was no coincidence that the U.S. Lines' cruise ship (United States perhaps?) just happened to be entering the Narrows at the time the bridge was being opened.
It was a majestic sight as the liner passed under the bridge.
BTW, prior to the bridge, I used to take the 69th Street ferry to meet my ride to get to my summer job at Marine Park at Flatbush and Ave. U. Yes, I confess, I was a New York City Department of Parks "Parkie". We were building the golf course at "Marine Park Sludge". Any other closet parkies on-line? Worked 6 days a week and cleared $47.92!
