It was great to hear that word..."stoops" again. I'm wondering if
the change in SI's neighborhoods isn't due to the effect of the bridge
and that it has become a bedroom community for the commuters to NY
and NJ? So many large places of employment shut down on SI (the
shipyards, the docks, SS White, etc.) that people don't have that
much in common anymore. Before the bridge, even if they worked in
Manhattan, they at least shared the load of commuting together. I
know a lot of people still use public transportation for commuting
but I don't think there's that same sense of cammeraderie that there
was when the bus used to break down, or the ferries were running late.
A good example of how today's commuters lose touch is when I had to
ask you guys to geographically define 4Corners and Meier's Corners for
me. I had it right...but my brother who has never left SI, couldn't
tell me where they were...he spends his auto time commuting on the
expressway over the bridge...DAN
