i think that's the problem with the island now, there's not much sense of neighborhood like my relatives and you guys
say there used to be. This is especially true on the south shore where except
for New Dorp and Great Kills "town", alot of people really keep to themselves.
No one really talks to each other - there's almost no sense of community.
People don't even seem to care much what goes on outside of the
confines of the fence surrouding their homes - they go in their cars, into
work in the city protected by their 2 ton vehicle, then as soon as they
come home they dash into their houses and hole themselves inside
the rest of the night. Something I admire about Brooklyn (no matter how
unpopular it is to alot of islanders) is the fact that - in the good areas - people
sit on their stoops and talk to each other and help each other out. When
something happens to someone in the neighborhood usually the neigbors
get together to help the person out. Or you'll see some kid help the
old grandmother get her groceries down the stairs to her apartment.
It's just something you sadly don't see here much at all.
