It's quite easy ... they spent $30 originally. Than the hotel clerk gave back $5. Now they have only spent $25. The bellhop kept $2 which means they have spent $27 in total - ie $9 each!

think of it this way

out 30 in 5 remaining 25 + 2 from bellhop = 27 9 * 3 = 27
