My wife and I live on Grymes Hill (on the east side) and enjoy some of the most spectacular sunrises. In the evening we sit in our back yard and watch the moon go through its orbit over the Verrazono Narrows bridge.
Prices are reasonable for some properties, while others seem unbelievably overpriced. The enjoyment of coming home from work (Manhatten) and driving up into the greenness that comprises Grymes Hill is inexplicable.
Other perks of living so close to the campus of Wagner College is the security trucks that continuously roam the streets. Perhaps the presence of security, and the steepness of the hill itself, explains why we do not see anyone but residents and students in the neighborhood. Another perk is the events of the college itself. One can catch a musical by the theatre department, a football game or a baseball game on a lazy summer afternoon within a brief walk.
As I have only been here for a little over a year, I do not know very much about the historical underpinnings, or current events, that make up Grymes HIll. However, I seem to recall reading recently something about a movement to keep the trees on the side of the hill facing the highway. If someone can elaborate on the details, I would appreciate it. Because of these trees, you cannot smell the highway and the sound is extremely muffled.
When we initally moved to NYC, I was concerned that I would not enjoy it fully. I am essentially a farm boy who moved to the big city. Grymes Hill gives me the sense that while I still live in the city, I can still have maintain my gardens and experience the beauties of nature with the changing seasons.
