Here's the daily update.
The first of 6 bronze dolphins was set upon its perch yesterday in the new million-dollar fountain at South Beach. In the coming weeks, 5 more dolphins, each approximately seven feet long, will be installed in the semi-circle fountain- which measures 22 feet in diameter and sits in the 350-foot-long paved island at the foot of Sand Lane.
The fountain ad works on the surrounding area, which began in Jan., is scheduled to be completed June 20, when the area's official unveiling will coincide with the 100th anniversary of greater New York City, according to the office of Borough President Guy V. Molinari.
When completed, some of the mammals will rise 17 feet above the structure, while other diving dolphins will rest at ground level. The perched dolphins will appear to swim as they're bathed by spraying waster from 47 nozzles that will pump 2,000 gallons of liquid per minute. Cables of colorful fiber optic, which will attach to the dolphins' tails and give the appearance of waves, are expected to arrive this week.
Yesterdays' work brought the completed renovation of the South Beach waterfront one step closer to reality. The borough president has been working for 3 years on various projects to restore the beach and its surrounding area. Plans for next year include in the installation of a children's water sprinkler on the property adjacent to the fountain. In addition, officials are continuing to try to get a restaurant on the boardwalk.
