I lived in St. George for nine years. On Central Avenue, a short walk from the ferry. I loved it. For several years I lived there single, then stayed when I got married for a few more years. I never had a problem. My wife never had a problem. My friends in the apartment never had a problem (and we are talking about a few attractive single women). There are several beautiful "pre-war" apartment buildings and many lovely Victorian homes in the area. Unfortunately, St. George is on the border of a low-income ghetto-ish area where drugs are rampant. The crime and drug activity is concentrated in this general area near "the projects". St. George also houses more than their fair share of the island's social services. If you are someone who is predisposed to shrink away from neighborhoods with a large minority presence, St. George many not be for you. Despite this many people enjoy living in the neighborhood. There is an active civic association and much community awareness here.
