There's a restaurant in Maryland where for about seven or eight years
I ate dinner at least 325 times a year. One night, just to amuse
myself, I decided to take a little survey, so I stopped people passing
my table and asked them to nominate one person as "Entertainer of the
Century." I knew all these people, so you can't call it a very scientific
survey, but I asked about thirty ladies and gents as well as three or
four waitresses (not to imply that the waitresses weren't also ladies).
I got a surprisingly small list of nominees. Bob Hope and Elvis had
four votes each, Sammy Davis had three, and one vote went to Joan
Rivers(!) and one to Enrico Caruso(!). Sinatra got all the rest. One
guy didn't even slow down--he kept walking right past me and said:
"Sinatra. Who else?"
