You are right. There should be no sentamentalism for this creature. Its wonderful taste is appreciated by more than just StatNislanders. It is a staple of many sea creatures as well.
So why is such and intelligent being "wasted" for the tastes of millions?
Well it is because the calamari is such a good lover. It has a skin that lights up like a neon sign to signal its emotions to mates and fellows. It exhausts itself in one incredible night of mating and dies exhausted but satisfied.
The offspring of this spawn are so numerous that after hordes of sea creatures feast each night there are plenty of calamari left over to grace the tables of eager StatNislanders.
Please forgive me if you think my appreciation for its intelligence was advice for you not to eat it. As it turns out, I can't hold to my promise. Where is my dish of calamari?
