Based on my experience with several different breeds including the "heinze 57 veriety" I would say first decide what size dog you would like. My persona thoughts would be the BIGGER the dog the BIGGER the bite the BIGGERRRRR the turds and the mess to clean up. Another thing is the hair that dogs DO shed. I loved my "long haired Shep" but OHHHHHH the hair and clean uP :( ... precious dog but lots of work. Right now I have an 8 lb. mix (1/2 mini dachshund 1/2 I chheee wow wa) and a TALL pure bred fawn colored Boxer. Both dogs are GREAT and what I would consider "low maintainance" - very short hair, well know for good home manners & personalities, ez to train, clutsy at first but gentle dogs & very "people friendly" unless commanded otherwise. I live on a park & lake and the Boxer is known for sticking close to home. We were easily able to train him to run a short distance in the park and come home on his own. We call him the "9-11 min. sh*t" LOL cause you can almost set the time of his return when we let him out for a run. I didn't believe it myself but Boxers are great house dogs and very smart & ez to care for - "U" do have to make sure they have a good jaw structure (they tend to have drool problems sometimes) ours never has the drooling that ya often hear about associated with Boxers (unless ya put goodies in front of him and say "don't touch that" LOL)they love to play (frisby,ball,skate boards,surfs,snow plays,swims, boats, YEP all kinds of "good buddy" stuff! They are good when traveling and extrememly loyal companions. The little dach/cha is equally as good but on the cutsie side, what I like about her is that she's always "puppy like" because of her size and I can take her anywhere with me.
I've also had a Manchester terrier (little hyper at first),Rat Terrier, Mini Dachshund, Alsatian (like a Shep)and lots of mutts. Can't really complain about any except for the amount of hair that I don't want to clean up daily and the poop patrol we like to be smaller, dry & ez to clean.
