I never had a dog when I was a kid either. I have made up for it in the years since. We have owned many different breeds, as well as mutts. Right now, we have a chocolate lab and a miniature schnauzer. I would recommend a lab for you. They are intelligent, easy to train. eager to please, and great with kids. We raised a litter last year, and almost every pup went to a family with small children. Everyone is happy with their new family member. Labs are probably the most patient dog I have ever seen. Our lab is almost 4, and our schnauzer is only 6 months old. You would not believe what the lab puts up with from her. She is constsntly biting on her tail or neck, or jumping on her. While I love my schnauzer dearly, and she is well behaved and lovable I would not recommend this breed if your children are very small. While most are great pets, sometimes they can have an attitude, and don't want to be messed with. May I also recommend that if you own your home you invest in invisable fencing. It is
the best way to go. The shock does not hurt the dog, just startles them, and they are free to run within the boundaries. We installed it when our lab was a pup, and have had no problems with either dog getting loose. It is easy, and alot cheaper, to install yourself. I hope this helps. Oh, by the way, labs come in black, chocolate or yellow, with black being the most common and therefore easier to find and cheaper to buy.
