Dear Lenny: I suggest a beagle. I base my advise on the fact that my fiance once owned one. She said he was very calm and was not a "messy" dog (not much slobbering). They do have a tendency to be chubby because they love to eat! So, if you choose a beagle, please feed him/her wisely after they leave their puppy stage (higher food value, lower calories). And, of course, have the dog neutered or spayed, not just for reproductivity considerations, but for having a better temperment animal.
Also, beagles are big "mooshee pies" (love snuggles).
