Madame T- you have hit the nail on the head. The bottom line is controlling yourkids and letting them know what is right and wrong. We are close in age, I too grew up watching the 3 Stooges but never hit my brothers with a hammer! Many times I wanted to! My father kept a rifle and a shotgun in our apartment on Lincoln Avenue. I knew they were there, my younger brothers all knew they were there, but if we ever got caught playing with them- we wouldn't be able to sit for a month! We would visit upstate every Easter and again during the summer. Dad would get the guns out and teach us how to properly use them, safety, which way to aim, which way to NEVER aim etc. It was an upstate thing, it never crossed our minds to play with them on SI. We learned respect for what agun can do and perhaps a bit of fear when he would bring us a clipping from the paper about one of those accidents with an "unloaded" gun that would pop up now and then. I ended up in the Navy and earned Expert medals in shooting every type of gun they have. I won tournaments at nearly every duty station I went to and have the trophies to this day and am proud of them and my acomplishments. I do not and will not have a gun in my home. It's just a matter of choice. But if I did and if I had kids- I would teach them the same things my Dad taught me. This will sound sort of stupid- but gun control begins in the home. If these kids were taught properly, this would never have happened. Then again- they just may have a few screws loose and all the instruction in the world would not have helped. If I was a looney, I could have grabbed Dad's shotgun whenever I wanted.... I suggest we pray for all involved and hope that the Governement does not try to put a band aid on this wound with something stupid like tighter laws. Maybe they should teach, instruct and inform. Like another post here says, if I had the answer to this, I could retire. I just know what worked for me and my four brothers- PARENTAL GUIDANCE! 'nuff said!
