We all got pretty heated up about this subject last night. I had been engaging rs and charlsey on topics related to prejudice and common courtesy when your posting about the group home appeared. It seems you fell into a school of sharks getting ready for a feeding frenzy. And you were delicious!
It is understandable that your adrenaline went up when this "change" was introduced as a "done deal." I have seen it done both ways and it does not seem to matter whether change comes as a done deal or with advance information, it is only human to react. The important things for us humans is to remain HUMAN and "act" appropriately. Your present posting outlines some things that will help you get to know something about the organization that wants to install the group home. The community has a right to know what the plan is and how it will be executed. They also have a right to know about any successes or failures this organization has had with prior ventures. After you get this information and perhaps get to visit one of the homes you will be ready to cautiously welcome these fellow humans to your block. We have one group home for juvenile delinquent boys on our block and two independent living group homes for adult retarded people a block away. Our neighborhood has not changed at all. There are more problems with parking when a neighbor has a party than there ever was with traffic related to the homes. The independent living family is cute. They are always so very happy to be able to smile and wave at us when they or we walk by.
