I am the mother of a severly handicapped daughter who is now 27 years old. She lives in a residential facility in Harrisburg,Pa. because there are not enough residential homes on Staten Island to cover the need. So, I only get to see her infrequently and on extended trips home say for a week. As a divorced 49 yr old woman,my capability for caring for her at home is practically non-existant. She needs total care, is wheelchair bound and non-verbal. If she had a placement on the Island (or ANYWHERE in the metropolitan area) I could enjoy her life and we could interact as child/parent. But, negativism and bias such as is displayed here has and I am afraid always will, prohibit that. So, here's hoping your property values escalate because your community values really suck. Here's hoping you never need to write a letter like this either about your own child or possibly a grandchild. Be careful....you never know what the future holds....
