I belonged to a neighborhood association whose members assailed any plan that affected the neighborhood. Want road improvement? Think of the noise. The air pollution. You name it.

NIMBYism it's called, for Not In My Back Yard. Daytop Lodge, on SI thirty years ago was an early example. Everybody wanted people to get off drugs, so setting up a group home was proposed on the Island. Not In My Back Yard; no drug recovery people here...

Mentally retarded people are probably less harmful than neighbors who think they have brains but haven't proved it recently. Mentally retarded people usually travel in groups attended by counselors; the neighbors who think they have brains rarely offer this much protection to innocent bystanders.

Before getting bowels in uproar, might be wise to check it out further. Ever had a disabled person in your own family? If not, better check it out even further. Just a suggestion, before the live firing starts... -rs
