I was reminded of the wonderful "Speech and Discussion" course I had at PRHS while reading some of the old Nostrivia entries I found while using Altavista. Mr. LaHutta's course was the first time I was challenged to think about important issues like prejudice, representation of China in the UN, Hamlet's sanity and others. If it were not for the opportunities and direction he gave us, I would not have discovered the reading room at the 42 Street Library in Manhattan and the respect that serious thinkers get irrespective of age or appearance. Imagine, I was only 15 and the people who processed the call slips and provided me with books treated me with respect. In my own household I did not get that much respect.
When I read the November entry that Bob Sheridan wrote about prejudice, it really struck me that my experience was not all that unique. Perhaps it was all a result of being from Staten Island where all the children are strong, the girls are good looking and the teachers are above average!
