According to a Port Richmond High School teacher, the term "Big Apple" Was coined from the depression. I remember the teacher telling the class that the people of NYC needed to make money somehow in those stuggling times. Since NY State has a great reputation for Apples, People could sell these apples and make some money. And so the people who were selling the "BIG APPLES" made the most profit. And thus, the term the "Big Apple" came about.
