I never knew that "it's" was anything but a contraction for it is. Maybe I just don't remember. It's been that way for at least the last fifteen years.
DJ, if you're looking for a good grammar book, Diana Hacker's A Writer's Reference might do nicely. It's highly accessible. It's a spiral bound, tabbed book. I use it with my college composition classes, as do many of my colleagues. When I teach literature classes, I find that many students still use it when writing their essays. They like it for its clear, direct prose and its easy-to-use format.
