Late next month it'll be exactly 50 years since I left S.I., and I've been back only twice: once when I was teaching in a Baltimore High School and had to take a bunch of kids to a convention at Columbia; I just took them across in the ferry and back again, so I didn't see anything terrible on the Island.
The other time was when I went back for about four days in 1965. It looked about the same to me then as it always had.
What exactly happened to it to dismay so many people? Was it the fault of the bridge? The dump?
Anyway, I'm glad to hear a couple of people say that things are improving.
